So you’re here. I’m here. We’re here for a reason. We have some affinity for this odd, wedge-shaped car. But what is it exactly that makes us, in many cases, obsess over this vehicle? For some it’s pure styling. For others it’s simple, bullet-proof mechanicals. However, for most it’s probably a combination of the two and then something more. As they say in France, a certain, “je ne sais quoi”.
There are a lot of great cars out there that we’d all enjoy owning. If I were wealthy and could afford the space and insurance costs, I’d have a dream stable of all sorts of automobiles. My dream “garage” would have Italian exotics, concept vehicles, unique custom rides, and classics from every decade. But I absolutely would have a corner of the facility for a small fleet of XTs. I’d have one of each basic model that was in 100% original condition, then several modified versions, and then at least one daily driver. Yes, with all the wonderful cars in my dream garage, I’d probably still keep an XT as my daily driver. Why is that?
Without looking at ink blots and answering questions about my mother, my self-analysis breaks it down along the three main reasons I mentioned at the beginning: styling, mechanical design, and that certain “je ne sais quoi”.
