Weeee. Suspension/brake upgrades on my 6.

Postby Caboobaroo on Tue Mar 27, 2012 6:59 pm

Finally got most the parts to put my XT6 back under the knife once again but hey, its a garage queen that sits most the time so why not?

Decided to part out my RX project as I will never have time to finish it before I move back to Oregon next year so I'm using the upgraded parts from that on the XT6. This is when I love Legos

The list of parts isn't too terribly long but it is exciting.
2004 WRX front and rear calipers, DBA3000 rotors and Hawk HPS pads
2004 WRX rear backing plates, modified for the XT6 trailing arm
2000 2.5RS leather wrapped ebrake handle and rear disc brake cables (different vs. drum brakes)
KYB AGX front struts and rear shocks with new tophats
Ebay special coilover sleeves (still working on what springs I want to use as I'm not fond of the coilover sleeves)
SPC adjustable radius rods and Whiteline radius rod bushings
Whiteline front and rear swaybar bushings
1996 Impreza front knuckles with new bearings and hubs
Freshly rebooted EJ front axles

I got the parts removed from the RX and at work so I can press the bearings out and assemble everything at home. Going to have to done before WCSS and will be taking pictures during the progress once I get to a point where I'm working on the car instead of prepping everything :D

Wait.....ej axles?

I'm feeling like I'm missing something.....can you use ej axles instead of xt6 axles? Does that include cv joints and everything?
Eff, I wish I had more technical know-how :?

So yes, EJ axles are the same DOJ spline count and size as the XT6 and really any turbo EA82 car. All they need to have is a 25 spline stub shaft on the transmission for them to work, then use EJ knuckles, bearings, brakes and struts to give yourself A) camber adjustment B) better selection of suspension and C) better selection of brake upgrades. Technically when I'm done, I can bolt STi Brembo calipers onto my XT6.

Are all the other bits necessary for this to work? or could I use the axles, then just change in parts as need-be?

Kind of all or none. I have seen some people go through the trouble of making parts fit without having to do it all at once but you might as well save up and do it once. You can get everything ready and then have the car down for half a day to do it, instead of "Oh crap, I need XXXX to get this back together."

Been down that road one too many times

Ordered the radius rods off of Amazon and the Whiteline bushings I ordered before I left work.

Now need to get my knuckles to work so I can press the new bearings into them.

I'm getting really excited

Nice. I loved swapping EJ knuckles and brakes on my XT6s. Better brakes, better ackerman, better axles, yea....

don't know what you're looking for in suspension, but my favorite setup was stock WRX front springs (163lb) and some 250lb eibach rears.

If your ebay sleeves use 2.5" springs, here's a cheap source for springs in just about any dimension you could want:

I'm running a pair of these on my Celica right now.

If you ever do decide to use STi Brembos, you'll also need to use 17s (or larger) rims. Anything smaller won't clear the Brembos.

Caboobaroo, do you have the part numbers of those Whiteline swaybar bushings? Wedge's are original and they are beginning to disintegrate.

Are the 250# springs good for the EA82 wagon also?
Thanks

I actually am running Enkei RPF1s in a 17x8 45+ in a 5x100 which clear Brembos. Got them for that specific purpose.

Subynut, I will try and get the numbers for them and post them up. I happen to be a Whiteline dealer so when I get my hands on the book this afternoon, I will jot the number down.

Caboo, do you have a link to those SPC adjustable radius rods on ebay ? Here in Aus we had a fella who modded Ford Falcon radius rods with their adjustable to suit 79 to 84 to take 84 to 90 CV axles, lower control arms for a different handling experience

Still need to get the Whiteline numbers for you but I'm hoping tomorrow is a bit slower for me (I'm one of the mechanics) and I don't get to play in the books all the time.

Got the other WRX backing plate I needed from work, working for an independent Subaru shop is rewarding. Top hats and wheel bearings are at work ready to be installed but I still need to source up some OEM axles at the junkyard.

Also I'm planning to get the car up on some stands this weekend and get to yarding the brakes and suspension out of it. If I have enough time, I hope to get the backing plates mounted by the end of the weekend. That is if I have enough time
