Does anyone Have any thoughts on Mark IV Golfs?

Postby MooseCarAudio on Fri Oct 18, 2013 10:38 am

Considering replacing my Camry and Charade with a Mark IV VW GOLF...
I need a comfortable hatchback I think... and as Much as I want a SAAB 900 Aero
It's probably not going to happen...
Not sure which engine is best though....
1.6L (Cheaper to buy...slightly... might be cheaper petrol wise... but :( )
1.8T (as in a GTI... but...a bit costly to buy and probably higher running costs)
2.0L (happy medium???)
I'm leaning tword the 2.0 litre.... I've driven a few Mark III Golfs with the 2.0 years ago...and was sufficiently impressed... nice Torque... very responsive
I was thinking of a nice GLE??? 2001-2002 ish

any response?

i'd do some research into which ones are expensive and annoying to maintain. some german cars are awful.

some of the early 2000 VW diesel automatics are junk, tons of issues, and replacement is the norm. not sure if that same or similar trans was used in other vehicles or not. i'd do some research on VW forums where common issues will bear themselves out.

I had a few VW's over my life (a few dozen). Before I started the soob crazy I was buying all the VW's I could at auto auctions fixing them and selling them. Mostly the late 80's models.

However, I did get a couple of these Mk IV's. Nothing all that bad about them. However, stay the hell away from a car with factory installed sunroof, they leak and you will soon have a chia pet growing down. Every car I've seen in Seattle with the factory sunroof is toast.

The engines are not as simple to pull nor work on. Electrical is sub-par, but usually not an issue. Valve cover gaskets leak but are easy to service.

The TDI engines, the intake gets carbon build up to the point power drops off. Google the issue and you can do this easily. I have two friends that used to pay me to get their TDI's back up and running. I love TDI's, but these engines like mechanical attention.

On a side note I had one of these totally taken apart for a EV build project I had going on. They make great EV conversions, but with the price of parts and my time a effort to slave in 18K worth of parts on a 14 year old car, I just bought a Leaf. Nearly every part I removed I had to wonder why the freak they did it they way they did, then I remembered its German.

Not a big fan of FWD either.

you have a Leaf Mr Radon? cool!

I have a friend with a 2.0 and it is automatic and is horribly slow. I just want to kill it with fire but I will say it has done him well with 175,000 on original everything (except belts and crap like that)

If you can get a TDi buy one. Yes they need some attention but so do women and I have learned that get some you need to give some

Oh and anything you buy will be a 10 fold improvement over a charade.

Love that little beast...
I'll post some pics up once it's back together
I've Disassembled the whole front end of it.... bumper... headlights ... grille etc
and the moulded mudflaps... repainting everything...
The car is in remarkable shape for its age
it's Done Just over 100,000kms...
and the minor cosmetic stuff that Was wrong... I'm fixing to sell for top dollars...
(hopefully)
I've seen basic G100 charades with twice the kms and in pretty shabby shape going for $3000 plus.
this one is a limited Mizuno Sports edition.... (Just meant Body colored mudflaps and bumpers... nicer trim inside.... some groovy stickers.. All white... Oh and Special Wheelcovers...lol
It's a super Tidy little runabout.
1.0 L
3 Cyl BEAST
3 speed Auto
Trying to make it as Perfect as possible.... It's taking me WEEKS to prep
I'm just hoping all the hard work will make it that much easier to sell.
It's Cheap to run
Cheap to fix
Cheap on fuel
Cheap to insure
Easy to drive
perfect first little car for some young driver...
sweet 16 present

never really understood why they didn't sell better here. Who wouldn't want a cheap $hit box? i bet i have seen 5 in my life.

The Rocky was pretty kicka$$ too. bummer about that one too.

I've looked at those, I had a 2000 jetta only similarities is the gti and jettas of those year share similar engines. I'd choose the 2.8 vr6 24v from 2002.5-2004 if possible, but 1.8t is fun also just doesn't sound as amazing.
