The GL-10 turbo build I said I'd never do

Postby kingbobdole on Tue Jul 24, 2012 12:02 am

I recently bought Larry's old beige wagon which Noss actually owned at one point. After raiding my parts stock and deciding to part my old GL I've been building a new motor, out of five different cars. The short block is a carby block from the GL which has higher compression then the stock turbo block, but not as high as the SPFI block. The heads are the stock GL-10 turbo heads, but as this is a previous CCR rebuild they are fresh third gen heads. Turbo charger is a VF-11 from a turbo legacy and the intake is front a late model XT. Oh and a WRX intercooler.

Initial test drive FAIL! Seems I built about 20 psi boost (a touch much) and WTO things happened. Firstly I popped a plug I had on the tb heater circuit. Secondly I blew the inter cooler off. Now I have three things to fix. Should be ready next weekend when I start my next swap....

Well, I e been putting with this thing in my spare time. Got everything motor wise fixed. Added a 3" nividia dp to make it super loud. Put the power heated seats I the front of it and finally got the old yellow top to take a charge again. Got it registered and drove it to the exhaust shop.... Which was temporarily closed to move. So I took it home.

Overall it's a death trap. It'll spin the tires in most gears and it really needs a front axle still. Brakes are rather crappy and the suspension is a mess, but it sure goes! It also tries to light the floor on fire thanks to the "short exhaust", but that's ok because it's cold outside. Lots to do still, still gonna weld the previous front seats into the back, replace the drivers rear door and all the door glass. Make the digi dash work more often, clean the bejesus out of it, oh and drop it on its nuts. Add the remote start to it and it'll be set for winter.

I sold my gtv for a profit.

That coupe is getting a 2.5

I'm only keeping old tan over the winter. Hopefully it'll hold together that long.
