Impreza brighton 1.8 vs 2.5rs transmission

Postby X35 on Tue Feb 08, 2011 10:29 pm

Difference between impreza brighton 1.8 and impreza rs 2.5 transmissions?

I think the brighton is 3.9 ratio, while the RS is 4.11. Any other differences? Both should be hydraulic I think?

I could put a 2.5RS clutch into the brighton transmission? And maybe swap the rear end

I can get one for cheap, but not sure if it will work....Plus the taller gear would be nice

I'm running a 1.8 Impreza 3.90 in my SVX..
They are a cable clutch set up, but you can use them in a NA Hydraulic clutch Subaru,(have run one in our 03 RS for a while) just have to change the clutch fork, and pivot point (has the threaded boss for either use)
Other wise it will be a direct bolt in.....the rear diff on the Brighton is the smaller housing, you would need to use the whole rear diff, and probably axles, as I think the Brighton diff has outies, and the RS has innies :mrgreen:

Can I swap the 3.90 gears into the RS housing? Like it is done on the SVX 4.444 swap?

Lastly (?) what about the speed sensor, isn't the brighton a cable drive speedo? Or can that be swapped in as well?

Thanks

Can't swap the rear diff gears, as the smaller housing takes a different styled gear set...but you can swap the 3.90's out of a XT6 rear diff into the RS's housing....

And the speed sensor just screws into the same place that the cable went.

I think I see a cable on this one:

It's from a EJ18, so it seems likely...what do you see?

If you mean for the speed sensor? It looks electronic in this pic;

with all those pic's i can't see the clutch fork at all - but i don't see a slave cylinder of any kind but the pictures aren't really showing that area well.

that's an EJ18 that we didn't get here. that's a Phase II layout so who knows what it has being JDM i'd just contact the seller and let him tell you if it's cable or not.

Yes, that is a clutch cable.

I thought that you were asking if the speedo was electrical or cable...

So;
clutch = cable
speed sensor = electronic

What Dave said......
And if it is JDM it "Might" have the correct style rear diff with it.....if it has the 5 bolt side plates on the rear diff, then it should swap into the RS

Well I lucked out sort of...I picked up an impreza Brighton 5MT for $50

Now I need the matching rear diff with 3.9 ratio.

A XT6 manual Rear diff will work for swapping out gears, but has the outty stubs so you can't just swap the whole diff
