1988 XT6 5-Speed White 211k rust-free -- $1500

Postby xtlicious2 on Fri Jan 10, 2014 5:42 am

I bought this car in Los Angeles (Riverside, think dry desert) and had some good times with it over the past year while I was living there. It was my first XT6 and it is a good one. I'm now in Atlanta -- had it shipped here when the job changed. If I had an extra driveway to store it in I'd keep it as a fun 3rd car. As it is we just moved into a house with a 1980's 2-car garage that only fits one car, along with a driveway with zero extra space. So I kinda no longer have space to work on it except the garage, and in Georgia where it rains and can get cold, my wife gets the garage for easy / comfortable kid transfer in/out of the cars.

So without further boring ado, here's the nitty gritty:

Some work for you:
+ The chrome black plastic covering has come off the exterior drip trim piece at the base of each window. I was going to use electrical tape to "recover" them.
+ The top edge of the windshield seal will let in a few drops of water in a hard rain. The seal is visually good; may be able to caulk it (I have not tried).
+ There is a slight amount of chatter when engaging first gear. It's not bad, and doesn't make the car shudder, but it is noticeable. And it's really only noticeable when I'm not driving it. If you don't slide the clutch it's not noticeable at all. I only notice it when I'm a passenger and whomever is driving takes a few throws to get used to the shifting.
+ One a cold day, or after the car's been sitting, the valvetrain clicks for a few seconds before oil makes it up / over to the valves. When I drive it daily it doesn't make any such noises at startup. The idle is amazingly smooth. I mean, sometimes when I stop at a light the only way I know it's running is looking at the tach.
+ All of the exterior emblems are faded away -- you can still see them, but just barely.
+ There are some scratches and dings, most likely. However, off the top of my head I can't recall any at all.
+ When I first got it the AC blew warm. I charged it (it is r134a) and it immediately exposed a hissing leak out of the *front* of the compressor (but blew cold). I purchased a used/rebuilt single-belt compressor off of eBay but it is uninstalled (included). In addition, I refreshed ALL of the seals in the AC system. I can probably find time to install it if you're not willing or able. I'll give you my refrigerant and oil, as well.
+ The rear left wheel bearing clicks loudly around turns and in hard acceleration. I have not attempted to fix it, yet. I wouldn't hesitate to take it on a trip, but probably wouldn't drive it across the country without getting the bearing done.
+ The instrument cluster trim / bezel is present but cracked up. It'll have to be glued in place if you want it to stay. It's only partially cracked / off -- just the part from the top of the steering wheel around the left side vent.
+ The front suspension has been converted to conventional, and it is a bit bouncy -- most noticed at speed or if you hit a big pothole. Around town and even going around corners I really don't notice it. It comes with a pair of monroe replacement shocks, new and uninstalled.
+ I don't have factory floormats -- in their place is plastic cut-to-fit mats in the front.
+ The gas release door doesn't *POP* open. I normally pull the release then end up using my key to wedge open the door. It's doesn't stick -- if you have good fingernails you can probably just use your finger.
+ Normally when I'm driving the doors aren't locked and the "door lock" light on the dash will stay on unless I lock the doors. I don't know if that's operation as designed or not. And, of course, if I unlock the doors from being locked the "door lock" light illuminates once again. So it's consistently reminding me to be safe in this dangerous world of Subaru XT carjackings that we live in.
+ When you press the electronic locking differential button you can hear an electronic motor whir for a couple of seconds. However, there is not instrument cluster feedback that the diff is engaged / not engaged.
+ The radio / LCD display backlight bulb is out. Readable in daylight, but not at night.
+ The rear seat tops have some sun damage but are not coming apart... yet. I tossed a towel over them.
+ The cruise control buttons don't seem to do anything. I tried it once when I was test driving to buy and it worked; tried it again last week and it didn't work.
+ The headliner is starting to sag.

The good parts:
+ The body has no rust; it was in the desert of California, then Pasadena (where I lived) up until October 2013 when I moved to Atlanta. I did the autocheck. The VIN is JF1AX9422JG314456
+ The paint is in surprisingly good condition! Shiny and not sun-baked as you might expect from the desert.
+ VCGs just completed. I was getting a noticeable seep onto the exhaust out of the driver's side but I went ahead and did both.
+ I put on new tires when I bought it (<5000 miles ago)
+ I replaced the rear sway bar brackets and bushings with new since they were completely missing when I bought it.
+ Power locks work, power windows work, power antenna works, radio works, pop up lights work, fogs work, no lights or warnings on dash, blower works at all speeds, heat works, wiper is good and works... what am I forgetting? Every electronic doodad seems to work.
+ All CV boots are solid and dry. I had to replace one of the front (I believe driver's side) CV boots when I first got it. Any receipts / parts receipts like this that I have go with the car.
+ The front driver's seat is the best seat in the car -- not very worn at all and supportive. The passenger front seat is all there and looks good but is kind of hard.
+ I've done some general maintenance since I've had it -- wiped out the TB, plugs, filters, fluids. However, nothing major has been done. I don't know the age of the clutch, starter, HGs, or anything else. It doesn't visually burn fluids or pee on the ground, either. I've never had to top off any of the fluids between changes.
+ Brakes are strong and aren't squeaking. I don't know pad depth, rotor depth or runout.
+ Suspension doesn't pull or complain / rattle. Visually I don't see any boot cracks. Bushing-wise there is nothing obvious going on, either, from a visual check or driving butt sensor check.
+ It pulls strongly throughout the power band in all gears. It is a real blast to drive.
+ It is in the background of many scenes of two yet-released pilots for A&E. One of them was filmed in Los Angeles but not yet released and the other is currently filming in Atlanta and not yet released. I have NDA's for both so can't give details. And it's not featured in either pilot, but rather just seen in the background.

My cell is (626) 592-9163, text OK. Give me a call / message if you have any questions. Hopefully it's obvious I'm not purposefully attempting to leave out any details.

I'll post pictures after taking a few today. $1,800 OBO. Title is clean and clear (California paper title). The tag is current. It expired in November and instead of moving it to Georgia I registered it as non-operational in California. However, it will pass smog in California if you live in California and want to re-register it. Optionally, I can take it through smog in Georgia as proof :) Otherwise, if you're in Georgia, it's old enough to not need to be smogged / go through emissions.

Been driving it daily over the past two weeks in our inclement / freezing weather. It's been performing like a champ with no valvetrain noise at startup. Remaining defects are the front coilovers that give an extra 1/2 bounce, clicking rear left axle / bearing (though it hasn't been as noticeable in the cold weather, for some reason), and bulbs that are out behind the LCD displays in the center stack. It's icy / rainy and freezing today and she'll be back on duty...

Should also add that I've been driving it in rain, parking it in rain (hard rain), and have had no further water drips from the windshield seal. The only thing I did was take a dental pic and clean out dirt from around the seal, then press it down into the window / frame gap. In addition, the rain gutters had partially popped off and gained some tree gunk, so I cleaned out and re-attached the rain gutters.

Nope. I've been having a blast driving it these past two weeks in the Atlanta weather. I can pretty much go anywhere in the XT, it's great!
