Front XT6 air strut bolt holes tough to line up??

Postby grossgary on Sat Jan 21, 2017 8:58 pm

I removed a front EJ strut and am installing an XT6 air strut. If I install either bottom bolt the knuckle won't push into the strut bracket to line up the other bolt. I can get it close enough to stick a 1/4" extension in it, but that's it. If I leverage it, it seems rigid with no give.

It's been a few years since I installed an air strut and I've done them probably dozens of times but I don't ever recall this.

The axle blew apart while driving in this hub just like a week ago (a brand new aftermarket axle LOL) but has driven fine since. That wouldn't have caused anything right?

The stubby shaft on the transmission was partially pulled out not leaving enough room to push the axle/knuckle fully inward. Seated the stub and al was well.

Glad you figured it out. I'm expecting to run into similar scenarios when I have my suspension installed.

installing strut assemblies is usually easy and quick. Two lower bolts, three top nuts and done.
Brake brackets can be cut a notch so you don't have to open the car line.
Air suspension has air line to disconnect (wrench) and electrical connector to unplug.

If the EJ strut was using the EJ bolts, the XT6 strut's bolts are smaller and don't have the Camber adjustment....will need the XT6 bolts, this maybe the issue?

The stubby shaft had pulled out of the trans and wouldn't allow the knuckle to be pushed in far enough to line up. But it was only millimeters away from lining up so it wasn't immediately obvious.

It had XT6 strut mount bolts in it and I was just reusing those.
