Converting to earlier rear bumper

Postby RhodyM20 on Fri Nov 25, 2016 1:08 am

For some reason, I can't get past the fact that the early-model rear bumper is more attractive to me. I like the reverse lights in the bumper, and the blacked-out "Subaru" lettering on the center garnish between the tail lights.

Here's my question: how difficult is it to convert a later car to this setup? Is it a direct fit (and does the center garnish without reverse lenses snap right in?) Finally, can you adapt the wiring without too much hassle for the reverse lights from the center garnish to the bumper assembly?

Not a big deal if it's not worth it, but I've now found a total of four local parts cars, two of which are early models and I could get the rear bumper assembly with ease.

Thanks,

Jeff

Should be a direct swap imo. May have to use some of the early wiring harness for the lights.

Thanks John. When I have the yard remove the bumper, I'll ask them to be liberal in how much of the reverse light wiring they grab.

So now I need an opinion: is this sacrilegious? I am a purist at heart but I think this look is so much cleaner. I love the wrap-around appearance of the tail lights and the reverse lenses in the center panel just kills it, in my opinion.

Then again, I don't think any XT6s came this way so it's certainly not factory correct...

I always preferred the earlier style.

Same here. Actually looking for the parts to do this to my 87.5 gl

I was gonna leave the lights in the tail panel, and put some h-3 led bulbs in the bumper lights

Haha, glad to hear I'm not the only one!

Anyone have any tips on what else I should have the yard guys remove from the car for installation on my vehicle, or is it basically just the bumper and any wiring I can get my hands on?

Hey guys.

So I have a local parts yard that is pulling this part for me. However, they called concerned that their Hollander catalog showed the rear bumper was specific to a 2WD car. As this is an XT GL, is there a difference in the bumper design for 4WD (maybe behind the bumper)? I highly doubt it, but I don't know these cars as well as some of you so I wanted to confirm.

Thanks,

Jeff
