XT6 Wheelbearing adventure

Postby Numbchux on Tue Feb 17, 2009 10:12 pm

so....my '6 needs new front bearings. On Sunday, I called up the local O'reilly's to order some (assuming they'd be fairly hard to come by), and they said they had 2 in stock.

I drive up there, and look at them, and sure enough.....4-lug bearings. So, after some searching (had to pull out the book....as the computer didn't have a 6-cyl listed), found a part number for the bearings, and got them ordered, supposed to be here Thursday.

Today I realize that we never looked up the seals, I looked them up in my Subaru OEM parts quick reference book, and the inner seal is the same for 4-lug and 5-, but the outer has a different number. look in the computer and book, and both have the same part # for both seals for 4-cyl and 6-cyl. they had both in stock, so I bought them.

luckily I've got an extra set of XT6 front knuckles/hubs, so I pressed the old bearings out, and test fitted the seals. the inner seal fit perfectly, the outer seal fit perfectly in the knuckle, but the center hole in it was too small, so it wouldn't seat correctly on the hub.

Soooooo......I hop on RockAuto.com, and they have the same part numbers listed for the XT6 that we got at the store. So, after some cross-referencing, I found a setup that worked.

alright, now, the good stuff.....part numbers
inner seals (this is the same for 4-cyl EA82s and Xt6s): OEM, 906250018. National, 710230
Outers (XT6 specific): OEM number in my 4 year-old book: 9062580020
looked up that number on 1stsubaruparts.com, and it listed the superseded number: 28015AA070. this turns out to also be the outer wheel bearing seal for many EJ-series stuff. so, I cross-referenced that application to some other brands...and got:
Beck/Arnley 0523570
Timken 225650
BCA/Nat 710463

I went up there tonight, and they had the National ones in stock, and they are a perfect fit!

soooo......if anyone's looking for wheel bearings for you XT6....don't trust the computers unless you're going OEM.

Fixed.
Good info though... I hate doing press in wheel bearings... always forget the blasted brake dust shield.

haha, yea. I think it was archemetis who ordered an XT6 disty cap, and went to pick it up, and it was for a 4-cyl......DOH!

I used to hate it. then I bought a press. didn't have to pull the dust shield to do it.

don't blame o'reilly's. RockAuto had the same (wrong) part numbers listed, and so did advance. actually I only go to o'reilly's these days, as I've had the least screw-ups there.

yarg. got the bearings. they're definitely the correct part. got one in no problem.

started on the other side, wasn't paying attention, and the inner race was crooked as I was pressing the outer race in, and it split the bearing retainer

SO, I looked at the EJ knuckle I had laying around, and it looked to be the same part. looked on RockAuto.com, and the BCA/national bearings have dimensions listed on them, and they're the same dimensions for XT6 and EJ, even though it's a different part number. THEN, I realized that Beck/Arnley had the same part numbers listed. here's the full application list for that part number:

Funny how that works
here they had a fat lazy 20? year old girl who said "who makes that?" when I said Subaru....

I don't trust any of them since they had the serp belt size wrong in the computer for my ESCORT!
