XT turbo (4wd) rear bearing removal

Postby Bram_R on Fri May 19, 2017 3:58 am

Not sure if rear wheel bearing procedure and construction is the same for XT turbo and XT6, but I didn't found too much info on the manuals on this.

However my rear wheel bearings are in good shape, I was thinking of have the rear control arms sandblasted and powdercoated and replace the bearings afterwards.

Anyway, I removed the rear control arms already.

Outside of control arm looking at the bearing looks like this (conical bearing, outer race pressed against a shoulder).

Inside of control arm looking at the bearing looks like this:

I've read that the inside ring with the indents is some kind of castle nut which can be removed using a special socket or by using a punch to rotate it.

Probable after removing this ring, the bearing package can be pressed out from the outside, using the old conical bearing to press out the outer race which sits behind that shoulder.

Let me know if I'm missing something.

That special socket is called a "pin socket" I have one somewhere. Did rear bearings many years ago and don't recall having to use a press.

Thanks John, this pin socket probably looks something like this?

For a very good DIY I found this topic btw. This explains everything very well.

Also found this pin socket is mentioned in the Subaru MSM as # 925550000.

thanks, Bram

That's a pin socket. Folks that have 4wd trucks with a solid front axle use them.

Would anybody know a good address for buying that pin socket for the XT (turbo / 4WD)?

Over here I can order it, but is over Euro 81,00 excl. shipping.

Should be able to find it cheaper somewhere I guess?

I have one I'll never need/use again. Make an offer and it's yours.

John's socket was lost in the depths of an old toolbox, so if anyone else got one or knows where to buy one cheap, let me know.

They're not available anywhere over here either. Have to google or keeping trying on forums and hope you get lucky.

Can make one or use a punch.

Removal can indeed be done with a punch, but installation requires torqueing the ring down.
I like to do this with the correct torque setting.

But I will construct something out of some lasercut material, this will work.
I will weld a large nut to it to place a socket on.

Thanks Gary,

My lasercut parts came in and this weekend had to time to assemble my home made tool:

This is the rear wheel bearing lock nut again:
IMG_8579 (Small).JPG

Here's my 6mm insert fitting the lock nut snugly:
IMG_8580 (Small).JPG

Welding the parts together, using the 2 x 6mm lasercut parts and M16 bolt and nuts. This way I can put a (torque) wrench to the M16 bolt head:

Inserting the tool in the lock nut:

Time to start wrenching!

P.s. if people need the DXF files or the drawings, let me know
